INTERVIEWS
Benoit and Olivier are both former Exhauster players, a band that we knew quite well in UI. Why did you launch SINN?
Actually, we left EXHAUSTER because the band was marking time: the potential was there but not motivation anymore. And since we really wanted to do some stuff with our music, we left. We never stopped playing. We even did some recordings at the time, in Time studio (Puteaux), but the result didn't match our expectations. Finally, Sinn started with Olivier (drums), Jose (vocals), Manu (bass) and myself (guitar) in 1998, two years after having left Exhauster.
Do you have specific goals or special motivations regarding this new project?
We worked very hard in the writing of new songs in order to find and develop our own pathway. By trial and error, we believe we have now reached a clear musical maturity and identity as "the 666 x murder project" testifies. We are now very busy promoting this CD. Our short terms objectives are various to play gigs and to distribute this CD in order to record a proper album at the end of this year. Therefore, we are as well writing new songs… Yes, we are quite busy at the moment.
From a musical point of view, what would you like to develop first with Sinn ?
The energy in the respect of our identity, the originality without excess: a band can indeed be very original but very boring to listen to at the same time. We try to keep this in mind when we write as after all our main goal is to play live, to take and give pleasure to our public when we play. We want to enjoy ourselves above all, so we follow our instinct as we don't want to plan everyting. However, this doesn't impeach us to work hard in order to be 100% statisfied with the thrash-hardcore-like songs we write.
Do you really care about the lyrics ? what are you favourite topics ?
The lyrics reflect the music, dark and sharp. Benoit writes them. They reflect our vision of the society, the human nature and its excess and perversions. The lyrics are quite hardcore, with no compromise, but Sinn doesn't claim any ideology, neither religious or political.
Do you hqve a specific method to write songs ? What is the duty of everyone ?
There is no speficic method, we look at the result. Benoit and myself are the two song writers of the band. We can work together or on our own, with a drumbox and a guitar, it can be live as well sometimes… As Benoit said previously, there is a huge work between the drafts and the final version of the songs. If we want to summarize, we could say that Benoit is more in charge of the riffs and melodies and that I am more in charge of the structure of the song… But it is actually less and less true and we really both look into each step of a song. And since we quite rarely agree at once, it can take quite a while to write a song.
You already recorded several stuff. How did you manage to record them and what reviews did you have? Tell us above all about your last recording.
The first recording have been done by Raph. But at the time, we were so focused on the songs and on the sound that we skipped the "communication work". We have rarely done any follow up and so very few people knew about us. Now, we will do our best to promote tha band and this CD. We had the first result of this new policy with very encouraging critics, some of them being even full of praise. We can't wait playing these songs live, to give them an even more intense dimension. The first time ever you record something, you really focus on the technical aspects, you skip the "fun" side of it. Now, we do everything by ourselves (recording, mix and packaging) but the mastering, still done by Raph. It is indeed necessary for us to have someone from outside to discuss and finalize the sound.
Have you planned to play live to promote the CD ? How important is it for you to be on stage ?
Of course, playing live is very important for us and we are waiting for some answers from organizers. A band cannot afford not to play live… but above all it is a real pleasure. And there is nothing wrong in doing what you like when other people enjoy as well, isn't it?
Your last word ?
Thank you and thanks UI for your work. We know each other for a long time now, and I can tell that your motivation and your reliability remain the same.
THRASH, HARDCORE, DISTURBING!
